The method is for the operating of lights on a motor vehicle, which are attached on or in the region of locking elements, especially of doors or hatches. The lights on the child-proof lockable locking elements are switched on and off in dependence upon an activation state of the child-proof locking unit. When opening the driver's or front seat passenger's door the lights on the child-proof lockable doors are switched on if the child-proof locking unit is activated. An independent claim is included for a device for the operating of lights on a vehicle which has a control unit connected to the lights so that these are switched on or off in dependence upon an activation state of the child-proof locking unit.
