A flash lamp (12) is positioned beside an optically-active erbium:YAG rod (10). Light leaving a first end of the rod passes through a wavefront control system (30) with a succession of lenses (32-40). The light leaving the lenses is focused on a highly reflective return mirror (16). Light leaving the second end of the erbium:YAG rod is partially reflected from a mirror (14). The laser beam (18) leaving the mirror passes through a beam splitter (Strahlteiler). The reflected beam goes to a beam analyzer (22), an evaluation circuit or software (24), and a wavefront control (26).
