The device has a tank (12) for fluid storage medium and exhibiting two chambers for heat emission and heat absorption, respectively. The ratio of volumes of the chambers is variably adjustable, such that the volumes of one chamber are decreased during volume increase of another chamber. A heat transfer mechanism (56) is coupled to a transport unit (46) for transferring heat between a working medium e.g. transfer oil, and the medium. An independent claim is also included for a method for storing a thermal energy.
