The non-circular lobe (5) is located low in the fluidization chamber (1). With the jet entry wall (3), it forms a gap (8) which passes the gas flow (7) causing fluidization. The return flow wall (4) and the lobe have no gap between them. As the lobe turns, the flow cross section available for the fluidization flow is varied. Closure is maintained between the lobe and the return flow wall (4) up to a given angle of lobe rotation. The lobe has a flat on the side opposite the jet entry wall (3), such that on reaching a given angle, a gap appears between it and the return flow wall (4). This permits the lobe to be cleaned from all sides, and to be moved without contacting the walls (3, 4). Fluidizing gas inlets (6) are arranged around the lobe. At least one of these lies along and close to the lobe. The inlet wall forms a channel below the lobe. Lobe geometry is varied in terms of effective cross section and location, to permit various volumes of fluidization gas to enter. Penetrations may also be included in the lobe.
