To generate electricity using water as a medium, a vertical pipe (1) is inserted into a water reservoir to a great depth e.g. 500 m, containing a number of turbines (A1-A20) in succession within the pipe up to a depth level under the water surface e.g. 50 m. A further vertical pipe section (2), over the water surface, contains a number of water pumps (B1-B10) powered by the turbines and leads into a curved section (3) at a height e.g. of 100 m and a downward vertical section (4) toward the water surface and parallel to the other vertical sections. A turbine (C) to generate electricity is mounted at the pipe end toward the water. A vacuum is created within the pipe before working.
