The system has a main heat exchanger (1) in the form of an oil-water heat exchanger via which it can be connected to the vehicle's cooling system and an additional heat exchanger (2) . The main heat exchanger can be decoupled from the cooling system so that heating of the gearbox oil is prevented when the coolant in the vehicle cooling system is hotter than the gearbox oil. An independent claim is also included for a method of cooling a gearbox, especially a load switching automatic gearbox with a retarder.
