The method for the trimming of plate-form workpieces (1,2,1*) on their side edges (2a,2b,1a,1b) entails interrupting the trimming if the rear edge (1d) of a workpiece passes the cutting tools (6,7), moving the latter from a rear position (P2) both transversely to the transporting direction to or from one another as far as the width of the next workpiece, and also in the transporting direction and then overtaking the front edge (2c) of the still to be trimmed workpiece moving them to a forward position where trimming is resumed and the cutting tools then moved back to their rear position. An independent claim is included for a device for the trimming of plate-form workpieces of various widths by application of the aforesaid method.
