The method involves attaching a pointer (31) to a scale (30), and indicating a value of an operating condition of a motor vehicle on the scale with the help of the pointer. The scale in an indication area, which is selected symmetrically around an actual position of the pointer, is optically changed and/or illuminated by a lighting device, where the indication area has the dimension between 10 to 30 percent of the scale. An independent claim is also included for a display device e.g. instrument cluster, for a motor vehicle.
