The method involves providing information about a vehicle speed, a transmission ratio of engine rotation speed to a generator rotation speed, an engine temperature and a generator ambient temperature. The cooling air temperature is calculated from the information by using a cooling air temperature calculation model (M), and the calculated cooling air temperature is output at an output connection (13) of the model. An independent claim is also included for a device for providing cooling air temperature of an air-cooled vehicle generator, comprising input connections.
