The method involves recording actual data of vehicle accelerations by sensors (7). The data with operating parameters e.g. engine speed is stored under conditions of chronological synchronism, in a separate control device (1). An objective characteristic data is determined for estimating switching operations in the device based on the determined characteristics of the accelerations, during the switching operations in the device. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining characteristic curves for controlling operating process of a fully automatic transmission or automatic transmission of a motor vehicle.
