An enzymatic esterification reaction to produce mid-chain saturated 3,3'-thiodipropionic acid dialkyl esters involves stirring 3,3'-thiodipropionic acid in presence of lipases with saturated mid-chain alcohols and removing the water of reaction in a vacuum, where the 3,3'-thiodipropionic acid can be replaced by a 2,2-thiodiacetic acid or other (alpha )symmetrical thia-alkane dicarboxylic acids or short alkyl esters of such acids, and the alcohols are long-chain saturated alcohols or medium- or long-chain unsaturated alcohols or mixtures of medium- or long-chain saturated and unsaturated alcohols.
