A parking aid for a vehicle has a camera (3) based proximity system which takes images around the vehicle and compares them with previously stored images in order to detect the presence of persons moving near to the vehicle, e.g. in the blind spot of the vehicle. The control system (2) operates warnings (12 to 14) and is switched off when the person has left the parking area. The system also takes images of the parking space including markings and compares the images with previously stored images to update the parking action and to provide real time information to assist the driver in parking the vehicle within the markings.
