Device for seam welding, especially roll seam welding of a workpiece with a rectifer for rectifying a 3-phase ac voltage source and a dc/ac inverter for production of a 2-phase ac voltage at welding frequency. The device includes a 2-phase welding transfomer with a primary winding and a secondary winding which feeds the welding electrodes, workpiece drive unit, contol unit, and a sensor unit which gives a signal indicating the workpiece transport rate relative to the welding electrodes.
