The sensors (14,15) are located within the upper part of the vertical interior (2) of a press housing (1a) or at the drive unit (8) of a press plate (5) within the interior to detect movement of the plate over an entire press stroke. Each sensor also provides a signal for stopping drive of the press plate upon sensing irregular movements caused by obstructions, e.g. stones, in the wastes. Part of the plate is shaped into a bar actuator raised upward for detection by the sensor.
