The system has a marking (3) that is integrated in a cover (2) of a backrest of a seat (1) of a motor vehicle and having specific reflecting and radiant characteristics in preset electromagnetic wave bands other than a visible radiation band. A receiver is constituted by a camera (4) and is disposed in an instrument panel (5) or a roof of the motor vehicle. The camera is oriented such that the cover is in a field of view of the camera. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle comprising a seat and an occupant presence detection system.
