Apparatus (2) for automatically coupling and uncoupling an overhead lifting device to a load, which apparatus (2) comprises a first part (8) for connection to the overhead lifting device (4), and a second part (10) for connection to the load (6): the first part comprising a body (12), connection means (14) attached to the body (12) and for connection to the overhead lifting device, and a grip and release mechanism (16) for automatically coupling to the second part (10) for load-lifting purposes and for automatically uncoupling from the second part (10) for load-release purposes; the second part (10) comprising a pin member (18) that enters the body (12) and causes operation of the grip and release mechanism (16); and the apparatus being such that the release part of the grip and release mechanism (16) is operated by the weight of the load. Preferably, a hydraulic damper (20) is provided.
