The device (1) comprises a portable casing (2) containing a combustion space in which the smoke is burnt, a filter unit for the smoke, at least one outlet opening (77) for the filtered smoke and one or more smoke displacement units located in front of the filter unit in order to urge the smoke towards to this opening. A mouthpiece can be releasably attached to the casing and allows the user to inhale tobacco smoke and exhale it via the filter unit. The mouthpiece (3) includes a holder for the tobacco product being smoked and this is also used to secure the mouthpiece to the casing so that the tobacco product held in it extends at least partly into the combustion space.
