A sensor comprised of a fiber Bragg material is applied to a structure. A beam of light generated by a radiant body travels through an optical coupler and an optical fiber such that disturbances on the fiber Bragg material generate a phantom proportional to the deformation of the beam due to a load applied to the specific point on the structure. The phantom is reflected through another optical filter and a Bragg filter to a demodulator that also receives a reference signal. The demodulator converts the optical signal to analog or digital for analysis in a data acquisition system e.g. PC.
