A method and a device for backtacking or tying off at the beginning or end of a seam in running-stitch sewing machines, the method consisting in that the seam is started or ended by performing at least two superimposed stitches (2, 3, 4, 5) reversing at least once the direction of advancement of the item (1) being sewn. The method is performed by using a device which, according to a preset program, reverses the direction of advancement imparted to the item (1) being sewn, and optionally varies the length of the stitch, during stitching.
