A 3D motion recognition apparatus using an LDA(Linear Discriminant Analysis) method and a method therefor are provided to easily perform interaction between a person and a system in a 3D motion application system and offer an intuitive immersion sense by analyzing motion data according to motions of various types by using the LDA method, generating a linear discriminant feature base, extracting/storing a reference motion feature by using the generated feature base, and searching a reference motion feature which is identical to a feature of 3D motion to be recognized among the extracted/stored reference motion features. A 3D motion capture unit(100) generates motion data per motion for the motion of an actor by using a marker-free motion capture. A motion recognition learning unit(210) analyzes motion data for the motion of plural types generated in the 3D motion capture unit(100) by an LDA method, generates a linear discriminant feature base capable of discriminating the corresponding motion data, extracts/stores a reference motion feature for the motion of each type by using the generated linear discriminant feature base, and recognizes the extracted/stored each reference motion feature as the corresponding motion. A motion recognition executing unit(220) extracts a motion feature from motion data for input motion which is a 3D recognition object generated in the 3D motion capture unit(100) by using the linear discriminant feature base generated in the motion recognition learning unit(210), searches a reference motion feature which is identical to the extracted input motion feature among the reference motion features stored in the motion recognition learning unit(210), and recognizes corresponding motion for the searched reference motion feature as 3D motion for the input motion.
