Multiple lane road especially motorway has a wider inner track for trucks and narrower outer lanes for cars

A multiple lane road, especially a motorway, has the inner lane (2) widened and the middle and outer lanes (3, 4) narrower. This enables trucks in the wider inner lane to spread the wear over the lane and prevent formation of ruts as found in conventional width lanes. The inner truck lane has a width of about 4.5 meters while the car lanes have a width of about 3 meters. The improvements can be applied to existing roads without an overall change in the carriageway width simply by widening the inner lane and narrowing the middle and outer lanes.
