The device has an optical navigation system (5), whereby the body (1) is provided with at least three active or passive markers (2). One or more accurately defined patterns (8) is/are applied to the entire or part of the surface of the body and the position of the markers relative to the pattern(s) is measured using the optical navigation system then the position and orientation of the body in space can then be measured using the marker position. An independent claim is also included for a process with an inventive device.
