The method involves outputting an information signal for a driver of a motor vehicle, when a fault exists at the motor vehicle and a road sign provides an indication of the corrective possibilities of the fault. The vehicle fault includes dropping of a fuel level, a brake fluid level, a tire pressure and a cooling water quantity below a given limit value. The information comprises an acoustic warning indication, a visual warning indication in a display and/or a voice output of the warning indication. An independent claim is also included for a device for informing about a fault at the motor vehicle to a vehicle driver.
