A fuel cell comprises a separator plate having a flow field with at least two flow channels (5,5') in which adjacent channels have changing flow cross-sections in opposite directions. Preferably the flow cross-section of a first channel increases in the flow direction and that of a neighboring channel decreases in the flow direction and preferably the cross-sections change discontinuously.
