The method involves generating an optical test signal with a varying polarization state at the transmitter end by modulation and determining a value for the polarization-dependent losses of the test signal at the receiver end after passing the signal through the transmission path by a time-resolved and frequency-resolved power measurement, which is used to correct the power level of the test signal. Independent claims are also included for (A) a transmitter for generating optical signals; (B) a receiver of optical signals; and (C) an optical system for determining polarization-dependent losses of optical signals.
