For the scheduled startup or shutdown of a pressurized water reactor, the connection of a pressure accumulator (24) is provided, via which the pressure of the coolant (K) in the primary circuit (2) is controlled instead of a pressure holder (12). At the same time, the temperature prevailing in a pressure holder (12) of the primary circuit (2) is increased when starting and lowered when starting. The pressure accumulator (24) is then disconnected from the primary circuit (2) and the system is started up or shut down completely. This measure keeps the temperature load on system components low, in particular during shutdown operation, and at the same time no complex additional installations are required. In start-up mode, the measures are carried out in the reverse order.
