Glass article coated with a hard material including a glass or glass/ceramic substrate with a surface layer comprising (at.%):M (30-45), Al (15-30), O (2-10), and N (30-42), in at least part of the layer where M = metal of Ti, Cr group of a mixture of these metals. An independent claim is included for a method of producing the coated glass article, e.g. by coating in vacuo.
