The method involves controlling an injection valve for a predetermined testing period and determining a fuel quantity actually injected from the valve from the pressure characteristics in a combustion chamber. A fuel quantity expected for the testing period is determined from the characteristics of the valve. The difference between the expected quantity and the actual quantity is estimated. A correction value for a control timing of the valve is determined, such that the difference value is zero. The control timing is changed by the correction value, during prospective control of the valve.
