The sensor has a strain gauge (1) for measuring the impact sound in a frequency range between 500 hertz-20 kilohertz, and partially consisting of silicon, where the sensor is attached in an area of a vehicle front and/or side parts and/or in the area of a vehicle tunnel. The gauge is fitted with an evaluation circuit (2) in housing. The gauge with the evaluation circuit is arranged on a silicon chip. The sensor is coupled with a processor of a passenger protection system such that the processor controls the passenger protection system in dependent of a signal of the sensor.
