The method involves stereoscopic analysis of two picture fields (R,L,R',L') comprising digital camera pictures, which are recorded by a stationary camera system (K). The object (3) with the camera system comprises two picture recording positions (1, 2) towards the different object. A distance (delta ) is recorded for both the picture fields which are gained by evaluation of light or contrast differences between the same neighboring picture pixels. The distance (A) is calculated from the distance of both picture recording positions and the parallaxes. The same cameras are used for the focal length as well as the number of pixels and size of image sensors. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for the determination of the distance of an object.
