The method involves selecting a data communication for controlling multiple units e.g. functional program unit, of an industrial system, where the communication is provided by a system software to be updated. New system software adapted to the units is developed using an updating unit (60), which has functions of the system software to be updated. Operation of the system is simulated in a simulation module. An independent claim is also included for a device for updating a system software.
