The method involves using a capacitive sensor principle for qualitative and quantitative determination of an electrolyte fill level of a lead battery e.g. starter battery, in a motor vehicle. Individual cells of the battery are separately monitored. Sensor signals are wirelessly transferred by a radio frequency-identification system. The signals are directly transferred from the starter battery to a battery-monitoring-system. Metallic conductors e.g. wires, are arranged parallel to sensing electrodes (31, 32). An independent claim is also included for a system for implementing a method for determining an electrolyte fill level of a lead battery.
