Preparation of a Hopcalite-catalyst comprises coprecipitating mixed oxide of copper and manganese from copper and manganese-containing precursor in aqueous solution by adding a precipitating agent with subsequent calcination, reducing the copper content of the coprecipitate by treating with nitric acid with subsequent washing and drying and increasing the copper content by treating the coprecipitate with a solution containing at least a copper sa where the added copper quantity is less than copper quantity that is removed from the reduction step. An independent claim is included for a Hopcalite-catalyst obtained by the process.
