The coil (10) has an inner magnetic core (26) concentrically surrounded by a primary coil (18) and a secondary coil (19). The core has upper and lower sheet metal strips stacked one upon the other, where the strips form rectangular or square cross-sectional surface area of the core. The upper and lower strips have reduced breadths in corner areas of the core within primary and secondary coil bodies surrounding the core, such that the strips extend to the corner areas. A gap formed between the core and the bodies is filled by an insulation material e.g. resin.
