Nano-dispersions of perylene dyes (V) in water are new. Nano-dispersions (I) of perylene dyes of formula (V) in water are new. R1-R8H, F, Cl, Br, I or 1-37C linear alkyl (optionally interrupted by 1-10 T) (optionally substituted by 1-12 F, Cl, Br, I, CN or 1-18C linear alkyl (optionally interrupted by 1-6 T) (optionally substituted by 1-12 F, Cl, Br, I, CN or 1-18C linear alkyl (optionally interrupted by 1-6 T)); and T : CO, O, S, Se, Te, cis- or trans-CH=CH (optionally with one CH replaced by N), -Ctriple boundC-, o, m- or p-phenylene, 2,3-, 2,4-, 2,5-, 2,6-, 3,4- or 3,5-pyridylene, 2,3-, 2,4-, 2,5- or 3,4-thiophenylene, 1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-, 1,5-, 1,6-, 1,7-, 1,8, 2,3-, 2,6- or 2,7-naphthylene (optionally with 1-2 CH replaced by N) or 1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-, 1,5-, 1,6-, 1,7-, 1,8-, 1,9-, 1,10-, 2,3-, 2,6-, 2,7-, 2,9-, 2,10- or 9,10-anthracenylene (optionally with 1-2 CH replaced by N). Instead of carrying substituents, free valencies of the methine groups or quaternary carbon atoms may be linked in pairs to form rings such as cyclohexane. Independent claims are included for (1) nano-dispersions (Ia) of perylene dyes of formula (VI) and indigo derivatives of formula (III) and (IV) in water (2) nano-dispersions (Ib) of lipophilic azo dyes such as Sudan Red or indulin derivatives or lipophilic phthalocyanines in water (3) preparation of (I), (Ia) and (Ib) using dispersants such as alkali salts, sodium, potassium or ammonium salts of fatty acids such as stearic, palmitic or oleic acid or of sulfonic acids such as fatty alcohol sulfonic acids or alkylbenzenesulfonic acids or naphthalenesulfonic acids (e.g. 2,3-dimethylnaphthalene-6,7-disulfonic acid) and/or (preferably) compounds such as maleinized linseed oil.
