Polyhydroxyalkyl sulfinic acid derivatives (I) are new. Polyhydroxyalkyl sulfinic acid derivatives of formula (I) are new. MO-SO-CYR1R2 (I) M : H or one equivalent of a mono- or polyvalent cation; Y : OH, NH2 or NR3R4; R3, R41-6C alkyl, 2-6C alkenyl, 1-6C hydroxyalkyl, 2-6C polyhydroxyalkyl, aryl or aryl(1-6C)alkyl; R11,2-dihydroxyethyl, 1,2,3-trihydroxypropyl, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroxybutyl or 1,2,3,4,5-pentahydroxypentyl; R2H or CH2OH. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a composition comprising at least one compound (I) in a carrier; (2) reductively decolorizing substrates dyed with natural and/or synthetic dyes by applying a composition as above and rinsing it off after a period of action.
