The method involves opening two of five gear shifting units of an automatic transmission (2) and closing remaining units for torque/power transmission in a forward gear and/or in a reverse gear. A shifting unit is opened/switched-off and another shifting unit is closed/ switched-on during execution of a set of shift-up and/or shift-in operations of the gears. A third shifting unit is opened and a fourth shifting unit is closed for another set of successive shift-up and/or shift-in operations of the gears. A fifth shifting unit is closed during the execution of the two sets of operations.
