The method involves normalizing an acquired image to form a normalized image. The normalized image is filtered by a low-pass filter to obtain a filtered image. A relative standard deviation is calculated for each pixel in the acquired image. A difference image is obtained by subtracting the filtered image from the normalized image. The difference image is thresholded by an edge threshold for each pixel to form a threshold-processed image. A contrast of the threshold-processed image is enhanced by a non-linear function to form a contrast-enhanced image. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for enhancing an image acquired by a radiographic system.
