The method involves measuring a distance between a motor vehicle (1) and objects e.g. person (16) such as pedestrian, or a tree (17) by an ultrasonic sensor (5) in an operating mode. The ultrasonic sensor is operated to determine an impact sound of the motor vehicle in another operating mode. The ultrasonic sensor is operated in its former operating mode during relative low speed of the motor vehicle. The ultrasonic sensor is operated in its latter operating mode during a speed of the vehicle that is large than the relative low speed of the vehicle in the former operating mode. An independent claim is also included for a device for identifying collision of an object on a motor vehicle.
