The method involves placing transmitter and receiver network nodes with different distances to each other. A total delay of a return signal and a distance between the network nodes are detected. A total delay-distance relation between the detected total delay and the detected distance is determined. The distance between the transmitter and receiver network nodes is determined based on the total delay-distance relation. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control device of a communication network (2) a network node of a communication network (3) a machine readable program code for the control device (4) a storage medium with stored program code.
