Magnesium sheet metal and strip (A) with excellent remolding properties preferably for vehicle lightweight construction, obtained by cast rolling, thin strip casting and/or thin slab casting of an alloy composition to a thickness of = 20 mm; subsequently finish-rolling the obtained composition to a thickness of greater than 10 mm and optionally roll forming the composition, is claimed, where the alloy composition consists of magnesium and an alloy of aluminum (= 10 wt.%), zinc (= 10 wt.%), manganese (= 1.5 wt.%), nickel (maximum of 0.005 wt.%), iron (maximum 0.005 wt.%), copper (maximum 0.01 wt.%) with addition of at least an element from rare earth elements of strontium, calcium or zinc, where the iron-manganese ratio is maximum of 0.0125 when the aluminum content in the aluminum alloy is greater than 1 wt.%. An independent claim is included for the magnesium alloy comprising nickel (maximum of 0.002 wt.%), iron (maximum of 0.004 wt.%), copper (maximum of 0.008 wt.%) and aluminum containing magnesium alloys with an aluminum content of greater than 1 wt.% and the iron-manganese ratio of less than 0.0125.
