A sternum separated longitudinally for an operation has to be supported during the healing process. The fixing device (1) has a base (2) to be inserted into the cavity behind the bones with four rectangular stationary rear elements (5) provided with pointed projections (9) around their edges and connected with bridges (6,7). Four complementary rectangular elements (3), also with pointed projections (19), can be moved along pairs of parallel positioned bars (4) towards the outer surface of the sternum.
