The device has a controllable power supply (1) for supplying a supply current, welding tongs (2) electrically connected to the power supply and with at least two electrodes (6,7), an arrangement (9) for providing electrical parameters for determining the process impedance at the electrodes and a control unit (12) for controlling the welding process. The control unit determines the process impedance sing the electrical parameters, compares them with one or more stored or externally supplied desired impedances and controls the welding process depending on the comparison(s). An independent claim is also included for a control unit for an inventive device.
