The invention relates to a method for shifting a multi-stage manual gearbox, in addition to a manual gearbox for carrying out said method. According to the invention, the shift fingers of the gearshift shaft of the gearshift linkage are actuated by a shift support that is preferably configured as a cylinder, on which carrier pairs, spaced at two different intervals, are arranged in tracks. The carrier pairs spaced at small intervals cause a shift stage to be selected, whereas the carrier pairs spaced at large intervals cause a shift stage to be deselected, optionally by means of rocker arms. According to the method, the selection of a shift stage or the deselection of a shift stage takes place as a result of a single displacement of the shift support.
