The system has a franking module (16) comprising a set of postal security devices (PSD1-PSD3) associated to corresponding determined carriers. A sorting unit (160) searches a low tariff responding to a predetermined criteria e.g. maximum amount to be paid, in a table of tariffs and services proposed by each carrier based on the destination and weight of a mail item. The mail item is then stamped with the postal security device associated to a carrier providing the low tariff.
