Device for opening and closing the drum door (23) of a horizontal-axis top-loading laundry washing or drying machine comprises trim panels (7) attached to door flaps and an actuator (8) that is mounted on a trim panel and can be moved in both rotation and translation. The gap between the actuator and the trim panel varies between a maximum value and zero during movement of the actuator, the maximum value being that when the door flap closes an opening (9) in the shell (21) of the drum (2). An independent claim is also included for a a horizontal-axis laundry washing or drying machine with an opening and closing device as above.
