The antenna has an array (R) of substitution sub-arrays (SR) of planar radiating elements (ER) e.g. dipole, and a beam formation module and active channels for controlling amplitude and/or phase of radio frequency signals to be transmitted or received in the form of waves by the sub-arrays so as to transmit or receive signals according to a chosen pattern. The sub-arrays comprise a mean number of the radiating elements increasing from a center part (PC) of the array towards its periphery part (PP). The sub-arrays are arranged with respect to each other for constituting an irregular mesh.
