The device has a rigid body (2) presenting a slide (10) and a support surface (8) perpendicular to the slide and adapted to position and guide a cutting instrument e.g. knife (16), to be tested. A foam rod (12) is placed in the slide such that the rod protrudes, at an end, in front of the surface. The rod has an upper red color foam layer (13) and a lower green color foam layer (14). The protruding end of the rod is cut by using the instrument and the instrument is evaluated based on the cutting of only the upper layer or both layers.
