The adapter (406) has an exterior surface for operably coupling to a sterile surgical instrument in a sterile field. An interior surface operably couples a non-sterile manipulator arm of a robotic surgical system. A drape interface transmits torque from the manipulator arm to the surgical instrument. The exterior surface includes retaining structures forming a wedge shape narrowing from a proximal end to a distal end.
