Use of a 408 amino acid polypeptide Seq. (2) (reproduced) for in vitro detection, in biological samples, of antibodies (Ab) formed as a result of infection with Legionella pneumophila. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) similar use of (a) a functionally equivalent fragment of Seq. (2) or (b) a sequence with at least 60% identity with Seq. (2) or its fragment; (2) similar use of (a) a 1224 nt Seq. (1) (reproduced), a functionally equivalent fragment or a sequence with at least 60% identity, or a sequence complementary to any of these; (3) use of antibodies Ab1, immunospecific for Seq. (2), or its fragment or homolog, for in vitro detection of antigens of L. pneumophila; (4) kit for the new method containing at least one of the specified polypeptides, polynucleotides or antibodies and a diluent; and (5) pharmaceutical composition that contains at least one of Seq.
